UMASS SOFTBALL DOUBLES UP ON FORDHAM TO OPEN A-10 PLAY

BRONX, N.Y.Sophomore Sarah Reeves' home run in the top of the second inning propelled the Massachusetts softball team to 1-0 win over Fordham to sweep the Atlantic 10 Conference opening series. In game one, Junior Samantha Salato hit a 2-RBI double in the seventh inning for a 4-2 comeback win as the Minutewomen extended their conference win streak to 23 games.
The Minutewomen had eight doubles on the day as they out-hit Fordham 16-6.
Sophomore catcher Jessica Serio went 5-for-7 with four doubles and an RBI to lead the team offensively.
Sophomore pitcher Bailey Sanders got the start in the circle in game two and had no problem keeping Fordham off the base. The right-hander gave up just two hits while striking out two to a Fordham team that was hitting .275 coming into the day.
With no runners on base, Reeves took a 2-2 fastball to deep left center for the first home run of her career. The Minutewomen would grab five more hits including three doubles Serio en route to their 12th victory of the season. Sanders improved her record to 4-5 on the year.
In game one, Junior Sam Salato hit a 2-RBI double in the top of the seventh as the Minutewomen came back from two runs down to top Fordham 4-2. UMass used five doubles on 10 hits to for their first comeback after trailing through six innings of the year.
Jessica Serio went 2-for-4 with RBI to go along with Salato's three.
Junior Brandice Balschmiter gave up just four hits while striking out six to move to 8-6 on the season.
The Minutewomen fell behind early in the bottom of the first as Fordham grabbed two runs on three hits to go up 2-0.
The Minutewomen loaded the bags in the top of the fifth with Salato up to bat and one out. Salato hit fly ball to deep left center that on any other day would have been a home run, but the hard winds at Bahoshy Field kept the ball in the park for an out. Pinch runner Davina Hernandez was able to tag from third on the play to cut Fordham's lead to 2-1.
After senior Stacy Cullington led off the seventh with a double down the third base line, junior Witney Mollica singled to left field on the next at-bat and advanced to second while catching the Fordham defense off-guard to put runners on first and second with no outs. After sophomore Sarah Reeves flew out to shallow center, Salato stepped up and delivered the double to right center scoring Cullington and Mollica to put the Minutewomen on top 3-2.
Serio doubled to the same spot on the next at-bat bringing Salato into score for the third run of the game and a 4-2 lead.
Balschmiter would retire the side in the bottom of the seventh to close out the game.
The Minutewomen return to the diamond Saturday with a double-header at La Salle staring at 12 p.m. EST. UMass will play La Salle at Warren Field on the University of Pennsylvania campus.
