CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Massachusetts softball team dropped its final two games at the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament on Sunday. The Minutewomen lost to Iona, 5-3, and Rutgers, 10-4.

UMass is now 3-12 on the season and will open Atlantic 10 play next Saturday, March 22 at Saint Louis with a Noon doubleheader.

Lindsey Webster finished the doubleheader with four hits, two RBI and two runs to lead the UMass offense. Taylor Carbone and Jena Cozza had three hits each.

Game One - 5-3 loss to Iona
Against Iona on Sunday, UMass jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Cozza's 3-run home run with two out in the fourth.

Iona got back into the game in the bottom of the fifth with three runs on four hits.

UMass had a chance to regain the lead in the sixth when singles by Quianna Diaz-Patterson and Webster put runners on second and third with one out. The scoring chance ended with groundouts to the pitcher and shortstop.

The Gaels took the lead in the sixth when they opened the inning with back-to-back doubles before a wild pitch gave them an insurance run for a 5-3 lead and their first win of the season (1-8).

Game Two - 10-4 loss to Rutgers
Rutgers got on the board in the top of the first with a pair of scores with two away - a solo home run to the third batter of the game and a run-scoring groundout.

UMass bounced right back in the home-half as Webster connected on a 2-1 offering and sent it over the boundary in left-center for a 2-run shot. It was her second homer of the season and marked the tenth-consecutive game she reached base.

The Scarlet Knights added an unearned run in the second to take the lead for good. They added four in the fifth on three walks and three singles. A run in the sixth and two in the seventh pushed the RU lead to 10-2.



UMass plated a pair in the seventh before finishing with 11 hits.
