UMass Softball Tops Fordham, 4-1
March 16, 2002
MIAMI, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts softball team defeated Fordham, 4-1, this afternoon at the Blue & Gold Classic.
The Rams got on board in the top of the second inning as a UMass error and two wild pitches gave Fordham the, 1-0, lead. Freshman hurler Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.) struck out the side to end the threat.
The Minutewomen retaliated in the third frame, stringing together three hits to score three runs and take the, 3-1, edge. Arnold led off the inning with a hit to right field. Sophomore Aisha Franke (Philadelphia, Pa.) sacrificed pinch runner Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) to second but Bakken was thrown out trying to stretch the play to third. Junior Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) followed with a walk and a Ram wild pitch put runners on second and third with one out. Senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) then hit a shot up the middle, scoring Franke and moving Robustelli to third. After a Rooney stolen base, junior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) grounded out to second base that scored Robustelli. Rooney scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
UMass added another run in the fourth inning as Robustelli drove in pinch runner Kim Harrigan (Reading, Mass.) on a bases loaded fielder's choice. A walk by Jamie Cahalan (Mesa Ariz.), a Fordham error and a bunt single by Franke set up the rally.
Arnold records her fourth win of the season as the Minutewomen improve to 12-9. Arnold allowed three Ram hits and one walk, while striking out seven.
UMass returns to tournament action Sunday at 1:00 p.m., against a yet to be determined opponent.
