UMass Drops A Pair To Open Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament

TAMPA, Fla. - The Massachusetts softball team dropped a pair of games to No. 12 Baylor, 5-1, and South Florida, 3-0, at the USF Softball Stadium Friday.
UMass moves to 2-9 on the season and will continue play in the event on Saturday against Butler at 9:30 a.m. and Seton Hall at 11:45 a.m., with the games at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
Game One - 5-1 loss to No. 12 Baylor
The Minutewomen put a run on the board in the bottom of the first when Cote' Clark singled to lead off the game, moved to third on a Quianna Diaz-Patterson sacrifice bunt and scored on Lindsey Webster's sac fly to right.
The Lady Bears tied the game at 1-1 in the third with a two-out chopper to left. Baylor secured the go-ahead run two innings later with a string of three-consecutive hits, including a run-scoring double by Linsey Hays.
Baylor added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
Clark, Webster and Lindsey Zenk each had a hit for the Minutewomen.
Tara Klee (0-3) took the loss after striking out five in six innings, with two earned runs on nine hits.
Baylor (18-4) had three players with two hits apiece and Heather Stearns (8-1) struck out seven in six innings.
Game Two - 3-0 loss at USF
USF got a 12-strikeout no-hitter from All-America and U.S. National team member Sara Nevins in defeating UMass.
The Bulls, who are receiving votes in the national polls this week, scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings to improve to 23-8.
Webster was hit by a pitch in the second and Tiffany Meeks had a four-pitch walk in the sixth to account for the only UMass base runners.
Dakota Smith-Porter (0-1) made her first career start in four appearances and allowed three runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. She also walked six batters.
