March 9, 2002
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts softball team defeated tournament host No.22 Florida State University, 3-2, at the Seminole Classic.
UMass jumped on board in the bottom of the first inning as Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) led off with a line drive to left-center field. Senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) followed with a walk and junior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) hit into a fielder's choice, advancing Robustelli to third. Senior Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases and an error by FSU's first baseman scored Robustelli to give UMass the, 1-0, advantage.
The Seminoles evened the score at 1-1 in the second inning on two hits, a walk and a fielder's choice.
The score remained knotted at one apiece until the bottom of the fifth when UMass used three hits to go ahead, 3-1. Rooney opened the frame with a double to left field. Cross followed suit, delivering a double of her own to the center field warning track, scoring Rooney. Walks to junior Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) and sophomore Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.) loaded the bases and a single over the third baseman by junior Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) scored pinch runner Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.).
FSU threatened UMass' lead in the seventh inning scoring a run on back-to-back hits but hurler Holtz forced the Seminoles into two ground-outs to end the game.
The Minutewomen advance to the consolation final of the Gold Championship against Southern Illinois. Game time is slated for 12:00 p.m. FSU is eliminated from the tournament.
