March 8, 2002
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts softball team defeated Southern Louisiana, 3-0, in pool play this afternoon at the Seminole Classic.
UMass got on board in the bottom of the first inning as one hit and two Lion errors scored junior Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.). Robustelli led off the inning with a blooper that SE Louisiana's short stop misplayed. Senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) moved Robustelli to second on a sacrifice bunt and junior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) advanced her to third on a line drive over third base. Designated player Nicole Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md.) hit Robustelli in on a hard ground ball up the middle to put the Minutewomen up, 1-0.
The Minutewomen added to their lead in the second inning on two hits and another Lion error. Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) started the UMass rally, drawing a walk and stealing second base. Rooney hit a single that got passed the left fielder, scoring Perey and advancing Rooney to third base. Cross followed suit with her second single of the day, lacing a shot up the middle to score Rooney.
The Lions threatened UMass' lead in the top of the seventh inning, stringing together three hits to load the bases with two outs. Senior hurler Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) secured the Minutewomen win, striking out Emily Stelly to end the game. Hadley earned her third win of the season as she scattered six SE Louisiana hits, one walk and four strikeouts over 7.0 innings of work.
The Minutewomen improve their record to 7-5 and continue pool play this evening as they face off against Southern Illinois at 6:00 p.m.
