Softball Falls To Florida International, 5-0
March 7, 2004
BOCA RATON, Fla. - In game two against Florida International, junior Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) and freshman Candice Molinari (Glendora, Calif.) led off the game with a walk and a single, but the Minutewomen were unable to bring them home. FIU then plated the games' first run in the bottom of the inning. Jennifer Owens hit a RBI single to center field. The Golden Panthers had a chance for more as they loaded the bases with one out, but sophomore pitcher Jenna Busa (Lexington, Mass.) was able to get a double play to get out of the jam. FIU, however, was able to push two more runs across of Busa in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Jennifer Powell had a RBI double and Owens added a RBI single for the Golden Panthers.
Again, the Minutewomen threatened in the top of the fifth inning by putting their first two runners on base. Both freshman Amanda Morin (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Kristi Stefanoni (Columbus, N.J.) singled to knock FIU pitcher Kendra Laminack out of the game. Nicole Barrett came in and retired the next three UMass hitters.
Florida International then added an insurance run in the fifth and sixth innings and the Minutewomen were unable to get the offense going.
Busa went 4,1 innings. She gave up four runs on six hits and two walks. She struck out four batters. Junior Barbara LaFogg (Willliamsburg, Mass.) then came in and pitched the final 1.2 innings. She gave up one run, one hit and walked two.
Massachusetts will head right back to South Florida for the Blue & Gold Classic hosted by Florida International March 12-14. The Minutewomen will play FIU, Virginia Tech and Miami (Ohio) in pool play before bracket play begins.
