Softball Falls To Florida Atlantic, 1-0
March 6, 2004
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts softball team (5-8) fell to Florida Atlantic University (18-9), 1-0, tonight in the FAU Worth Invitational. The UMass offense was shut down for the second time in a week by FAU pitcher Amanda Morin. She held the Minutewomen to four hits and did not walk a batter in her complete-game shutout. Morin posted seven strikeouts. UMass junior pitcher Kelli Arnold (Kalama, Wash.) was equally as impressive. She gave up just one run in six innings while scattering seven hits and three walks. She fanned three. UMass lost to FAU, 4-1, Feb. 28, in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
FAU scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the third. Pam Mazzarella's two-out RBI single proved to be the game-winner.
The Minutewomen had their best chances to score in the final inning. They had two on and one out courtesy of an FAU error and a fielder's choice in which Budrewicz, who was pinch running for Cahalan who reached on the error, was safe at second base on the ball hit to shortstop by senior Nicole Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md.). Morin got UMass freshman Amanda Morin (Worcester, Mass.) and Stefanoni out to end the threat and snap the Minutewomen's three-game winning streak.
The Minutewomen will play two more games tomorrow as the FAU Worth Invitational concludes. They will face North Carolina at 10:00 a.m. and then Florida International at 12L00 p.m.
