Softball Falls To #5 Oklahoma, 9-0, In Six

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The University of Massachusetts softball team (1-6) lost to DePaul (2-5), 7-0, and No. 5 Oklahoma (11-1-1), 9-0 in six innings, this afternoon in the first day of the NFCA Leadoff Classic this afternoon. The Minutewomen, who won this tournament last year have now dropped six straight games. UMass left eight runners on base against DePaul and managed just one hit against the Sooners.
In game two, the UMass offense did not fare any better against No. 5 Oklahoma. After a scoreless first inning, the Sooners jumped on Busa for one run in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth. Heather Scaglione hit a two-run home run in the third. UMass had its best chance of the game to score in the bottom of the third inning. Stefanoni led off with a walk and moved to second two batters later on a single by Franke. Both runners then moved up a base on a sacrifice by Molinari, but freshman Amanda Morin (Worcester, Mass.) grounded out to end the threat.
OU then added three more runs in the top of the sixth on a home run by Jamie Fox. She hit the three-run blast off of Arnold. Busa gave up six runs, five of which were earned, on 10 hits and two walks. She struck out one. Arnold yielded three earned runs on three hits in two innings of work. She fanned two. Nicole Denes pitched the first five innings for the Sooners. She gave up one hit and one walk while fanning six. Jessica Johnson pitched the final inning for the Sooners and retired all three batters she faced including two strikeouts.
The Minutewomen will conclude pool play tomorrow against Central Michigan. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Bracket play will then begin tomorrow afternoon through Sunday.
