Feb. 26, 2012
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The UMass softball team lost their last game of the weekend to #10/9 Tennessee 5-0, giving them an overall record of 5-5. The Minutewomen went 2-3 at the tournament, defeating #12 Michigan 1-0 and #20/17 Georgia Tech 1-0. The Minutewomen will play again next weekend at the Alabama Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
The first inning was the beginning of the end for the Minutewomen as the Lady Vols scored two runs that would never be answered. Raven Chavanne of Tennessee stole home for the first run of the game after stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. The second run was scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kat Dotson.
UMass held them to no hits for the next three innings until the fifth when Dotson singled to right field. Then in the sixth, Lauren Gibson homered to left field sending in two runners and giving them a 5-0 lead.
Stephanie Mayne had an impressive out to end the second inning, running into the fence to grab a foul ball with bases loaded. Katie Bettencourt also had a crucial play in the fifth inning, stopping Ashley Andrews on second from scoring by throwing what was a single to right field to the catcher and forcing the Andrews back to third. Kyllie Magill would then throw the Andrews out at home, preventing Tennessee from scoring that inning.
Christine Della Vecchia contributed two hits to the UMass offense, one to third base and the other to second base. Teea Rogers got her first hit of the weekend, singling to right center. Rogers also made an impressive out at first, picking up a bunt and throwing it to Tiffany Meeks to beat the fast runner Chavanne.
