#20 UMass Falls To NC State, 3-1, Splits On Day 1 In Georgia
Feb. 26, 2010
COLUMBUS, Ga. - NC State scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and Wolfpack starter Lindsay Campana kept the UMass batters at bay for the rest of the game as the Minutewomen (5-2) fell to the Wolfpack (7-5), 3-1, on Friday night at the NFCA Leadoff Classic at the South Commons Complex. The loss gave UMass a split on day one after defeating Mississippi State earlier in the day, 7-6 in nine innings. Whitney Williams accounted for half of UMass' hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and scored the Minutewomen's lone run. Meghan Carta was drove in the Williams with a single in the second innings. Campana (5-1), who UMass defeated, 1-0, in Miami two weeks ago, went the distance for NC State, allowing four hits while striking out 11 and walking three. Bailey Sanders (1-2) started in the circle for UMass, allowing all three Wolfpack runs in 2/3 of an inning. Sara Plourde pitched the final 5 1/3 innings in relief, not surrendering a run, while allowing just one hit and striking out 12 to go along with five walks. Landon Warren led off the bottom of the first for NC State with an infield single and later scored the game's first run on a two-out single up the middle by Claudia Cooper. The next batter, Stephanie Call, drove a 1-0 pitch over the right center field fence for a two-run home run that put the Wolfpack on top 3-0 and led to Sanders' exit. UMass got a run back in the top of the second inning. With one out, Williams doubled deep to center field, and with two outs, Carta singled to left center to drive in the senior shortstop. Campana and Plourde combined to put zeroes on the board the rest of the way, with UMass mustering just two hits from then on, and NC State getting just one.
UMass continues play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday with games against No. 6 Missouri at 1:30 p.m. and Illinois State at 6:30 p.m. |
