COLUMBUS, Ga. - The University of Massachusetts softball team (1-4) fell to South Carolina, 6-1, Saturday night in the silver bracket of the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Senior Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) drove in the lone run of the game for the Minutewomen.

The Gamecocks got on the scoreboard first with solo runs in the second and third innings off UMass senior pitcher Barb LaFogg (Williamsburg, Mass.). One of the runs was unearned. South Carolina also added a run in the top of the sixth to take a 3-0 lead.

The Minutewomen were held hitless through the first five innings by South Carolina pitcher Melanie Henkes. Junior Kristi Stefanoni (Columbus, N.J.) broke up the no-hitter by leading off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore Amanda Morin (Worcester, Mass.) followed with a single down the left-field line to put two on with nobody out. Sophomore Candice Molinari (Glendora, Calif.) then sacrificed both runners into scoring position for Puglia. Puglia grounded out to shortstop, but Stefanoni was able to score the first run for UMass. Junior KJ Kelley (Rainier, Ore.) flied out to end the threat.

South Carolina added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning and moved on in the silver bracket.

LaFogg gave up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks in six innings. She struck out five batters. Junior Jenna Busa (Lexington, Mass.) pitched an inning and gave up a run on two hits.

Massachusetts will now face San Diego State tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM in the silver bracket consolation. If UMass wins, it would play for the silver bracket consolation championship at 1:00 p.m.
