Feb. 25, 2012
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The UMass softball team lost their second game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday, falling to Illinois 4-2. The Minutewomen are now 5-4 on the season, 2-2 this weekend. Pitcher Bridget Lemire suffered her first loss of the season, giving her a 1-1 record. The Minutewomen play their last game of the tournament on Sunday against #10/9 Tennessee at 12:30 p.m.
Illinois got on the board first when Lemire walked in a run. They scored three more in the third inning, the first coming from a single through the left side. A single to third base sent in one run but a throwing error by Quianna Diaz-Patterson sent in another, bringing the Illinois lead to 4-0.
UMass struck back in the fourth inning, scoring their only two runs of the game off of a Stephanie Mayne two-run homerun. Kyllie Magill, who got on base by an error on the first baseman, was the runner on base when Mayne hit the homer.
Despite holding off the Fighting Illini from scoring for four straight innings, the Minutewomen could not come back from the four run deficit. Lemire recorded two strikeouts in the game, walked three batters and allowed ten hits.
