UMass Softball Suffers Loss To UCF Despite Early Lead
Feb. 24, 2013
CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Minutewomen took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first but were unable to hold off the Knights and lost 8-2 at the NFCA Leadoff classic in Clearwater, Fla. UMass (2-6) will return to Clearwater for the USF Under Armour Showcase on March 8 where they will face South Carolina and USF.
UMass tallied three hits and committed four errors in the loss while UCF had five hits and three errors. Starting pitcher Caroline Raymond struck out four batters in five innings pitched. The UCF pitching staff struck out seven Minutewomen.
Cyndil Matthew and Quianna Diaz-Patterson started off the bottom of the first with two singles and a sacrifice bunt by Katie Bettencourt got both runners in scoring position. A passed ball sent in Matthew and a throwing error by the catcher allowed Diaz-Patterson to score as well, giving UMass a 2-0 lead.
UMass held the Knights to one hit over the next two innings, but defensive errors in the top of the fourth gave UCF the lead and ultimately the win. Diaz-Patterson fielded the first ball put in play in the inning but over threw first base, allowing one runner on with no outs. With bases loaded, Samantha McCloskey hit a single to right field that sent in one run but a bobble by Bettencourt allowed the tying run to come in. A double to left center gave UCF a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
The Minutewomen failed to create any more offense over their last four at-bats despite a two-error fifth inning for the Knights. UCF scored four more in the top of the sixth off of one hit and two UMass errors, solidifying their victory.
