UMass Shut Out By Hofstra, 8-0

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Massachusetts softball team dropped its final game of the 2014 NFCA Leadoff Classic, 3-0 to Hofstra on Sunday.
UMass went 1-4 on the weekend, its first game action of the season after have last weekend's trip to the FAU Kick Off Classic canceled due to air travel delays.
The Minutewomen were led offensively by the top of the lineup in junior shortstop Quianna Diaz-Patterson and freshman outfielder Cote Clark. Both players hit safely in all five games and share the top batting average on the squad, at .375.
Caroline Raymond (1-3) suffered the loss after throwing a complete game and allowing all eight runs with three walks and two strikeouts.
Hofstra (4-1) had 16 hits and scored three runs in the first and sixth innings. Morgan Lashley (3-0) allowed three hits and struck out three for the Pride.
Hofstra got on the board in the top of the first with three runs on four hits. The first four batters reached on a pair hits and walks, before a two RBI singles were sandwiched around two outs.
The Pride added two more in the fifth on a Tori Rocha 2-run single to right.
An inning later, Senatore tripled to right center to lead off the sixth and scored on a Maggie Hawkins single through the right side. Hofstra added two more with two outs to close out the scoring with an 8-0 lead.
UMass will be off for a week before traveling to the Bluegrass State to participate in the Red and Black Classic at the University of Louisville. Other teams scheduled to participate include Illinois State, Ohio, Ohio State and the host Cardinals.
