UMass Softball Wins Second Straight Against Southern Illinois

CLEARWATER, Fla. - A four-run bottom of the fourth gave UMass its second victory of the day, defeating Southern Illinois 4-3 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Minutewomen (2-5) will face Central Florida on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
UMass ended the game with five hits and committed three errors. SIU tallied two hits and committed no errors. The Minutewomen were walked four times in the contest.
Bridget Lemire saw her first action on the mound this season against the Salukis and recorded her second career win. She allowed no hits or runs and recorded no walks in 1.2 innings pitched.
SIU took the lead early in the first inning, scoring three runs off of one hit. Freshman pitcher Emma Mendoker walked three consecutive pitchers and hit the fourth with a pitch to give the Salukis the 1-0 advantage. A single through the left side sent in two more runs and SIU ended the inning with a three run advantage.
UMass was unable to put together an offense early in the game, recording one hit in the first three innings. The Minutewomen rallied in the bottom of the fourth, however, and scored four runs off three hits. Quianna Diaz-Patterson lead-off the inning with a single and Katie Bettencourt followed with a double. Two walked batters gave UMass its first run of the game and a Taylor Carbone double sent in two more to tie it at 3-3. Anna Kelley grounded out to the second baseman but allowed Teea Rogers, who got on base via a walk, to score the winning run.
The Minutewomen held SIU for the next three innings, allowing no hits. Caroline Raymond came in as the relief pitcher in the sixth inning and struck out three batters in her two-inning effort.
