Box Score

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Senior Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) delivered a two-out single to left-center field to score junior Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) in the second inning as the Minutewomen defeated regional foe, UConn, 1-0, this evening in the first round of the Bronze Championship at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.

The Minutewomen led off the inning with a strike out, followed by a single to the short stop by Holtz. After another UMass strike out, junior Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) singled to the short stop, advancing Holtz to second base. Bakken then ripped a single into the left-center gap, scoring Holtz and giving UMass the 1-0 edge.

UMass ace Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) shut down the UConn offense, limiting the Huskies to two hits in seven innings while striking out four. The shutout marked the first of the season for UMass and the 18th of Hadley's career.

The Minutewomen (5-4) continue tournament play tomorrow as they take on Southern Mississippi (5-5) at 10:00 a.m. The tournament concludes tomorrow afternoon.
