COLUMBUS, Ga. - The 25th-ranked University of Massachusetts softball team (3-3) defeated 18th-ranked Oregon State, 7-1, this afternoon in the first game of the NFCA Leadoff Classic.The game started yesterday, but was called in the top of the sixth inning due to heavy rain.
Senior short stop Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) got the Minutewomen on the board quickly with a leadoff home run, her first of the season. Later in the inning, senior pitcher Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) recorded a RBI single scoring sophomore Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.), who had singled earlier in the inning, to put UMass up 2-0.
The Beavers got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first, but were shut out the rest of the way by Holtz. The ace scattered four hits in seven innings as she improved to 2-2 on the season. She also picked up five strikeouts, while walking two.
UMass scored three more runs in the top of the second inning. Senior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) delivered a two-RBI single with the bases loaded to put UMass up 4-1. Robustelli and sophomore Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.), who had both walked, scored on the play. Freshman Katie Jo Kelley (Rainier, Ore.) followed with a RBI single of her own to give the Minutewomen a four-run cushion.
Massachusetts then plated two more insurance runs in the top of the third inning. Junior Nicole Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md.) led off the frame with a walk. Senior Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.) then followed with a base hit putting two on and nobody out. After a strikeout, Denis delivered a RBI single scoring Wilson and sending Perey to third. Robustelli then grounded out for the inning's second out, but Perey was able to score.
Play was called at 1:40 p.m. on Friday due to heavy rain and the game was not completed until this afternoon. The Minutewomen will take on No. 20 Pacific later today as pool play continues.
