Bettencourt's Blast Leads UMass Past FAU, 6-1
Feb. 19, 2011
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Katie Bettencourt smashed a three-run home run in the top of the seventh as UMass scored four runs in the inning to blow open a tight game and give UMass a 6-1 victory over host FAU in the Minutewomen's second game of the day at the FAU Kickoff Classic on Saturday. The No. 2 seed Minutewomen (2-2) will play top seed and No. 10 nationally Michigan (9-0) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the championship game.
Sara Plourde struck out 12 batters to earn the complete-game victory. The junior allowed one earned run on three hits and five walks as she improved to 2-1 on the year.
Senior Meghan Carta and sophomore Teea Rogers each had RBI doubles, while Stephanie Mayne drove in a run as well. The junior reached base in all four plate appearances, collecting two singles and two walks.
Carta, Mayne, and Kyllie Magill all had two-hit days as the Minutewomen pounded out 10 hits after being held to just one in a 3-0 loss to No. 10 Michigan earlier in the day.
Leading 2-1 going into the final inning, Magill doubled and Jordan Storro reached on a fielder's choice to set up Bettencourt, who, a day after hitting a grand slam, hit FAU starter Taylor Fawbush's 2-2 pitch over the fence in center. Carta followed with a single and her pinch-runner, freshman Lindsey Webster, later scored on Rogers' double over the rightfielder's head to make it a 6-1 game.
UMass jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Magill, who led-off with an infield single, scored on Carta's two-out double to left-center.
The Owls made it a one-run game in the bottom of the fourth when Carly Speerin drove in Jordan Stovall, who led off with a walk, on a sacrifice fly.
