Minutewomen Fall To #24 Louisville At Combat Classic
Feb. 12, 2012
MIAMI, Fla. - UMass played their last game of the FIU Combat Classic in Miami, Fla. against #24 Louisville on Sunday, falling 2-0 in a sixth inning surge by the Cardinals. Senior pitcher Sara Plourde (2-2) recorded twelve strikeouts, including three 3-pitch strikeouts on the day. The Minutewomen finished 3-2 at the tournament, defeating Illinois, Florida International, and Michigan State.
The first five innings of the game lacked much action offensively as both pitchers had impressive performances on the mound. Before the sixth inning, each pitcher allowed only two hits. Centerfielder Christine Della Vecchia caught three balls during these innings to add to the outs.
The top of the sixth was when the bats started swinging, and Louisville got on second off of an error by Della Vecchia, who caught the ball but was knocked over by the shortstop Quianna Diaz-Patterson, allowing the runner to get on base. Then a late throw allowed what was a single to become a double and a run for the Cardinals. Another run came in for Louisville off of a single, giving them a 2-0 lead that would not be answered.
UMass had a runner in scoring position in the second and fourth and had runners on at first and second with one out in the seventh when the game ended because a two hour `drop' time had been established for the Sunday games due to travel arrangements.
The Minutewomen are back in action in two weeks at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. on February 24-26.
