Feb. 9, 2003
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Senior Emily Robustelli's (Stamford, Conn.) RBI in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the game-winner as the 25th-ranked University of Massachusetts softball team upset 13th-ranked Arizona State, 5-2, in eight innings this afternoon in the Fiesta Bowl Tournament. With the win, the Minutewomen improve to 2-3 on the season.
In the top of the eighth inning, Robustelli put the ball in play and scored junior KC Budrewicz (Buckland, Mass.) giving the Minutewomen a 3-2 lead. Budrewicz was on second base via the international tie-breaker rule. Senior Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.) provided some insurance when she hit an RBI single driving in junior Aisha Franke (Philadelphia, Pa.). Massachusetts added another run when freshman Katie Jo Kelley (Rainier, Ore.) had a bunt single scoring Robustelli.
UMass got on the board first this afternoon in the top of the third inning when sophomore Hilary Puglia (Stoneham, Mass.) knocked in Robustelli. Robustelli reached base on a fielder's choice and then stole second base. Puglia hit a shot through through the right side and Robustelli scored the game's first run when she was able ti beat out an errant throw by the outfielder.
In the fourth inning, senior pitcher Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, British Columbia) helped out her own cause by driving a home run over the right field fence. Her solo shot put the Minutewomen up 2-0.
In the bottom of the inning, the Sun Devils got on the board courtesy of a Phelan Wright solo home run. Then, in the seventh inning, Wright scored the tying run. Arizona State threatened to win the game, but Holtz was able to get out of the jam.
Holtz picked up her first win of the season (1-2) going the distance this afternoon, while giving up two runs, five hits and striking out four.
Massachusetts returns to action Feb. 21-23, as they participate in the NFCA Lead-Off Classic in Columbus, Ga.
