Box Score

PHOENIX, Ariz.- The No. 24 ranked UMass softball team took advantage of a struggling Texas pitching staff to defeat the Longhorns, 9-1 in five innings.

UMass utilized a Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) single, four walks, two wild pitches and two Texas errors to take an early 5-0 lead after the first inning. The Minutewomen increased their lead to 9-0 in the third behind singles by Aisha Franke (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Scooter Wheeler (Kingsburg, Calif.) and three more walks.

Texas got on board in the fourth after two UMass errors and a fielder's choice but any hope of a Longhorn rally was dashed as short stop Emily Robustelli (Stamford, Conn.) laid out for a line-drive and doubled a runner off second base to end the inning.

Jennifer Hadley (Bristol, Conn.) recorded the win for the Minutewomen with four strike outs, two walks and no earned runs in five innings of work. Wheeler, Jamie Cahalan (Mesa, Ariz.), Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Anna Perey each recorded a RBI in the victory.

The win improves UMass' record to 2-0 on the season as Texas dips to 2-2. The Minutewomen continue play in the Fiesta Bowl Classic tomorrow as they face Texas Tech at 11:00 a.m. and UNLV at 3:30 p.m.
