No. 24 UMass Softball Overpowers Kansas In Season Opener, 7-1
Feb. 8, 2002
PHOENIX, Ariz.- Senior Ashley Bakken (Phoenix, Ariz.) delivered a one out single in the sixth inning to score freshman pinch runner Denise Denis (Middle Grove, N.Y.) and put the Minutewomen up for good as they defeated the University of Kansas, 7-1, in UMass' season opener at the Fiesta Bowl Classic.
The game remained scoreless through five innings as UMass' Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Kansas' Serena Settlemier went head to head in a pitcher's dual.
In the sixth, senior Teri Rooney (Visalia, Calif.) got things going for the Minutewomen as she led off the inning with a triple to left-center field. After a hit batsman and an intentional walk to Brandi Cross (Diamond Bar, Calif.), Holtz drilled a single up the middle to give UMass the 1-0 lead. After Bakken's key single through the infield, the Minutewomen opened up the floodgates, scoring seven runs in the inning including RBI's by pinch hitter Nicole Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md.) and two by Anna Perey (Chino Valley, Ariz.).
The Jayhawks scored a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Amy Hulse but the UMass defense led by Holtz' four strike out performance shut Kansas down and gave UMass its first victory of 2002.
Rooney, Bakken, led the Minutewomen and Perey with two hits apiece. Katie Campbell had two hits for Kansas.
UMass returns to action this afternoon as it takes on the University of Texas at 3:30 p.m. The Longhorns, who received votes in the preseason NFCA/USA Today Top 25 coaches poll, are 2-1 overall.
