Jessica Merchant begins her fourth season as an assistant coach at UMass in 2010 after previously serving a one-year stint as a volunteer assistant at the University of Michigan.
In Merchant's three seasons with the Minutewomen, the team has a cumulative record of 122-37-1 (.766), winning the Atlantic 10 Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons.
Serving as team captain and an integral member of the 2005 Michigan team, Merchant helped guide the Wolverines to their first NCAA Championship in program history. A two-time NFCA All-American shortstop, Merchant held the school's career home run record (46) for three seasons -- she now ranks second -- and shares the single-season mark at 21. Merchant also ranks third all-time in career starts (252) and fourth in both career RBI (155) and doubles (48).
In 2006, the Wayland, Mich., native was a member of the USA Softball Elite Team that won the Intercontinental Cup title. Hitting .500 with a home run and eight RBI, she was chosen the event's MVP.
Merchant, a 2005 Michigan graduate with a degree in Sport Management and Communication. She played two seasons with the Connecticut Brakettes of the National Pro Fastpitch League and most recently with the New England Riptide. She was also invited to the Women's National Team selection camp in 2006.
