Dec. 6, 2010

AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's soccer senior Therese Smith was recently recognized by a pair of organizations for her outstanding performance in 2010, her final season with the Minutewomen. The midfielder was named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region Third Team and was also invited to participate in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association Senior Bowl this past weekend.

Smith, who was a 2010 All-Atlantic 10 second team selection, started all 19 games this fall and finished second on the team in scoring with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. She scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the team to a 1-0 win over Saint Joseph's on Oct. 24.

Smith is 11th player in UMass history to earn an all-region accolade from the NSCAA, the first since Britt Canfield was honored in 2006.

Her point and goal totals from 2010 were both career highs for the midfielder, who played in every possible game of her collegiate career for a total of 73 matches. Smith completed her time at UMass with 16 goals, five game-winners, nine assists and 41 points.

Minutewomen finished 2010 with the program's most wins since 2007 at 8-11-0 and earned an Atlantic 10 Tournament berth for a second consecutive season.
