Cota Tabbed UMass Athlete Of The Week
Oct. 3, 2011
AMHERST, Mass. - Women's soccer junior goalkeeper Emily Cota has been named UMass Athlete of the Week, it was announced on Monday. Cota is the third women's soccer player to be honored by the Sports Luncheon Committee this Fall, following teammates Stephanie Gordon and Grace Coombs. This week's luncheon will be held at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the Cape Cod Room of the Student Union Building.
Last week, Cota made nine saves in the span of two games, logging her fourth and fifth straight shutouts, for the Minutewomen's fourth and fifth straight wins as the team improved to 7-2-1 on the year, one win shy of the squad's 2010 season total.
At Dartmouth last Tuesday, Cota made four stops en-route to a 1-0 victory over the Big Green and helped successfully defend 14 corners in the match, including 11 in the second half.
She followed up by making five saves in UMass' Atlantic 10 opener, a 2-0 win over Rhode Island this past Saturday. The Minutewomen's shutout streak now equals the longest streak since the team logged eight straight clean sheets in 1996.
Cota is 5-1-0 on the season with a 0.33 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage, having allowed just two goals in 543:34 minutes in net this year, stopping 28 of 30 total shots over six games.
UMass will put its streak on the line this Friday, when the squad travels to Charlotte for the first of two Atlantic 10 road matches. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. at Transamerica Field.
