Women's Soccer Picked Fifth In A-10 Preseason Poll
Aug. 11, 2014
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team was tabbed fifth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, while junior co-captain Rebekka Sverrisdóttir was named to the Preseason All-Atlantic 10 team, the conference office announced on Monday. With 130 points, the Minutewomen trailed only preseason-favorite Dayton (189 points, eight first-place votes), La Salle (187, 6), VCU (143) and Saint Louis (138).
One of four defenders on the preseason all-conference squad, Sverrisdóttir appeared in 16 games in 2013 and contributed three points on a goal and an assist. The 2013 Atlantic 10 All-Tournament team selection helped the UMass defense limit opponents to one goal or less in 12 of 16 matches she appeared in last fall, including four shutouts. This past spring, she was named a team co-captain for 2014.
The Minutewomen are coming off a trip to the Atlantic 10 semifinal round in 2013 and return 18 players from last year's squad, including eight starters.
