UMass Women's Soccer Adds Eight For 2013

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass soccer program will welcome eight newcomers to the fold for 2013, head coach Ed Matz announced on Wednesday. Among the Minutewomen's Class of 2017 are three forwards, two midfielders, two defenders and one goalkeeper hailing from five different states and Sweden.
"We are incredibly excited to add this group of very talented young women to our UMass family," said Matz. "Many of these players committed to our program two years ago and are all ready part of UMass Nation. Across the board, this class will help us take a giant step closer to achieving our goal of winning an Atlantic 10 Championship in 2013."
Daniela Alvarez - 5-7 - M - Pomona, Calif./Pomona Catholic
Coach Matz on Alvarez: "Daniela, is terrific player who can come in and will make an impact in our midfield or on defense. She has the size, skill and attitude to step right in and contribute immediately."
Four-year starter at Pomona Catholic setting school records for goals (77) and assists (58) in a career ... Was a three-year captain along with being named the team's Offensive Player of the Year and MVP ... Led squad to CIF for second time in school history ... Played club soccer with Legends Football Club, a member of the USYSA National League ... Helped Legends FC capture the National League in title 2012 and advance to the USYSA National Championship ... Also won Far West Regional League as a member of Legends FC and advanced to the California State Finals ... Served as club captain since the U11 level ... Plans to major in Psychology.
Megan Burke - 5-8 - F - Shelton, Conn./Shelton
Coach Matz on Burke: "We are very excited to add Megan to our program. She will give us much needed height and speed at the forward position. She is very dangerous around the goal and can play with her back to the net."
Three-year starter at Shelton High School, helping the team win the Connecticut Class LL State Championship in 2010 ... Served as captain as a senior ... Tabbed New Haven Register All-Area, All-SCC Housatonic, All-State and nominated for the Senior Bowl in 2012 ... Finished career with 29 goals and 22 assists ... Also a starter on the basketball team at Shelton ... Plays club soccer for Connecticut Football Club United, a member of Elite Club National League (ECNL) ... Played Connecticut ODP in 2010 ... Member of the Italian National Honor Society ... CAPT Scholar.
Alyssa Fratarcangeli - 5-6 - F - Milford, Conn./Laurelton Hall
Coach Matz on Fratarcangeli: "Alyssa (Frat) has played and succeeded at the highest level of club soccer. She is very strong on the ball, is a very skilled passer and can make an immediate impact at forward or in the midfield. She has the potential to be one of the most talented players in the Atlantic 10."
Played high school soccer for Laurelton Hall ... Captured All-State and All New-England honors in 2011 and 2012 ... Also tapped as New Haven Register All-Area and Connecticut Post All-Star in 2011 and 2012 ... Played club soccer for Connecticut Football Club United, a member of the Elite Club National League ... While playing for CFC United, advanced to Regionals twice by winning Connecticut in 2010 and 2012 ... Was also a member of Connecticut ODP, making the Region I ODP team at U13 and again at U15 ... While playing for CFC, was selected to NIKE ID2 regional camp and also earned a spot on the ECNL All-Event Team ... Ranked by Top Drawer Soccer as a top 150 National Recruit and No. 4 in Northeast Region.
Tori Gonzalez - 5-7 - GK - Morristown, NJ/Morristown Beard School
Coach Matz on Gonzalez: "Tori has great athletic ability and a strong desire to develop as a goalkeeper. Her potential will bring competitive environment for our goalkeepers and her attitude and dedication are exceptional."
Four-year starting goalkeeper at the Morristown Beard School ... Served as team captain as a junior and senior ... Selected MVP of the 2011 season and Coach's Player of the Year in 2012 ... Was an All-State selection by N.J. Star Ledger 2011 ... Named Top Player to Watch for 2012 ... Selected All-County MCGSA, All-Conference Liberty Division and All-Prep all four years ... Set school record for most saves with over 1,000 career saves in four years ... Set school shutout record with 10 consecutive shutouts in 2012 season ... Led team to first ever Morris County Semifinal in 2012 ... Currently plays for SDFC Lynx, a member of USYSA National League, winning a NJ state championship in 2012 ... Played USL Super Y with NJ Spartans and selected to Super Y ODP National Team while serving as NJ Spartans U17 team captain ... Played for Jersey United Spartans in 2010 and 2011 and was named Team MVP ... Voted Most Athletic Girl for Senior Class of 2013 ... Also competed in varsity softball and swimming for two years ... Plans to major in Psychology, then pursue career in law.
Frida Lindblom - 5-8 - D - Ekero, Sweden
Coach Matz on Lindblom: "Frida will add size, height and experience to our very young back four. She is exceptional on the ball and makes good quick decisions, which will give us the ability to work the ball out of the back. She is great in the air, commands her area and her high level of play with the Swedish National Team will help her acclimate quickly to Division I soccer."
Central defender who plays club soccer with the strong Swedish Club Brommapojkarna ... Has represented Sweden internationally as a member of the U17 team ... Made international debut against Croatia in the UEFA European Women's Under 17 Championship.
Jaclyn Miller - 5-1 - M - Woodstock, Ga./Etowah
Coach Matz on Miller: "Jackie is an exceptional player. She has a tremendous work rate, skill, desire and attitude to be one of the best attacking midfielders in the Atlantic 10. She will be one of the most exciting and hard working players in every match she plays in this season."
An attacking midfielder at Etowah High School ... Helped Etowah to 5A state playoffs in 2010-2012 including a 5A Region title in 2010 and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2010 ... Voted team captain in 2012-2013, team MVP in 2012 and selected All-County three times ... Plays club soccer with NASA Elite '13, which competes in the USYSA National League, serving as captain since 2007 ... Was a member of the Georgia ODP team from 2009 to 2011 ... Plans to major in Biology and is enrolled in the Commonwealth Honors College program.
Sarah Pandolfi - 5-4 - F - North Haven, Conn./North Haven
Coach Matz on Pandolfi: "Sarah is a tremendously fast and dynamic goal-scoring forward. She has the ability to break down defenders and get herself quality scoring opportunities."
A four-year starter at North Haven ... Finished career with 54 goals and 25 assists ... Earned All-Conference, New Haven Register All-Area and All-State honors in 2011 and 2012 ... As a senior was nominated as captain and was selected to play in Connecticut Senior Bowl ... Plays club soccer with CFC United, a member of the Elite Club National League (ECNL) ... Helped CFC United win the State Cup and advance to regionals in both 2010 and 2012 ... Ranked by Top Drawer Soccer as No. 16 recruit in the Northeast Region.
Jenny Scro - 5-6 - D - Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur
Coach Matz on Scro: "Jenny was heavily recruited by many programs and we are fortunate she chose UMass. She is a talented defender who cannot only tackle and keep possession, but will help us attack out of the back. Her work ethic and determination through ACL rehab will allow her to return to the game stronger than ever and ready to make an impact come August."
A defender at MacArthur High School who helped lead the squad to conference championships in 2009 and 2010 along with a New York State title in 2011 ... Served as captain as a senior ... Tabbed All-Conference in 2009, All-County 2010-2012 and All-Long Island in 2011 ... Plays club soccer with East Meadow Soccer Club, a member of the Elite Club National League (ECNL) ... Helped East Meadow Soccer club to an Eastern New York championship in 2010.
