CHAMPIONSHIP BOUND! UMass Upsets #23 La Salle
Nov. 4, 2011
DAYTON, Ohio - The UMass women's soccer team will be playing for the Atlantic 10 title this Sunday after knocking off the top-seeded La Salle, 1-0, on Friday evening on Dayton's Bajuan Field in the semifinal round of the conference tournament. The Explorers, ranked No. 23 this week by Soccer America, were one of just four undefeated teams in the nation entering postseason play. La Salle falls to 15-1-3, while the Minutewomen improve to 14-4-2 on the year.
UMass wasted no time scoring on the Explorers, one of the top-ranked defenses in the country. Sophomore Cecilia Jensen dribbled through the midfield and sent a through ball ahead to senior Julie Morrissey on the wing, Morrissey's shot tucked inside the far post at 1:58. The tally was her team-leading ninth of the season and sixth game-winner of the year, good for fourth in program history for a single season.
The Minutewomen defense held strong for the remaining 88 minutes as La Salle out-shot UMass, 27-8, including a 17-2 margin in the second half. Corner kicks were 9-5 in favor of La Salle and fouls were 8-7 against the Explorers.
Junior Emily Cota totaled five saves while picking up her 10th shutout of the season, the team's 11th of the year. Cota is now tied for sixth in UMass history for single season shutouts. Melissa Sanger made three stops in net for La Salle.
UMass will play the winner of tonight's #2 Richmond-#3 Dayton matchup for the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. on Bajuan Field.
