Nov. 4, 2007
AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team (9-6-2, 4-6-1 Atlantic 10) concluded their season on Sunday with a 2-2 tie against George Washington. It was Senior Day as Kaelyn Caldwell, Britt Canfield, Christina Nunes, Jenny Roehrig, and Kristin Walker were honored prior to kickoff. Three seniors connected on the first goal; Roehrig scored, assisted by Canfield and Caldwell. Vanessa Patry scored the other goal for the Minutewomen, while Walker made six saves in goal.
UMass controlled play early with numerous chances in the offensive zone. Walker made a tremendous save in the sixth minute, aggressively going to her left to deflect a Kerry Phlbin shot away.
Therese Smith nearly put UMass up 1-0 at 14:23. From over 30 yards out, she took a shot ticketed to the top of the net. George Washington goalkeeper Amie Kern tipped the ball over the goal to force a corner kick.
Walker continued her excellent final game by making a tremendous stop going to her left off another Philbin bid at 32:47.
The Minutewomen found the back of the net late in the first half at 38:13. Off a free kick near the center of the field, Caldwell led Canfield with a pass down the left flank. Canfield caught up to it and sent a centering pass towards the net. Roehrig took one shot, which was saved, but the rebound came right back to her and she finished it off for the 1-0 lead.
UMass would keep up the pressure in the second half. At 47:11, defender Alyssa Visconti vied for her first-career goal. She shot to the right post, but Kern made another spectacular save.
In the 58th minute, the Colonials tied the score at one. Walker made a stop on Philbin, but the rebound came loose. A Minutewomen defender was called for a foul, and since it was inside the box, George Washington was awarded a penalty kick. Philbin converted, beating Walker to the lower left corner at 57:27.
UMass took the lead back less than a minute later when Patry picked up her fourth goal of the season at 58:03. She beat Kern with a soft shot over her head that slowly made it across the goal line. Adams was credited with an assist on the play.
George Washington answered again at 65:17. Keara Mehlert made a pass into the box to Dara Rosen. Walker made the first save, but she couldn't stop the rebound. Rosen converted for her first goal of the season. No one was able to score the rest of regulation, despite numerous chances. In double overtime, the best chance for either side came at 101:06, when Canfield took a long shot from 35 yards out. As she did all day, Kerm was able to punch the ball over the goal to force a corner kick.
The game finished in a 2-2 draw. UMass led in shots, 32-12, while taking more corner kicks, 12-1. Walker, playing in her first game since she was injured vs. Fordham (10/19), made six saves moving her to second place on the UMass career list with 373. Kern finished a tremendous game with 16 stops.
Following a five-point weekend, Canfield finishes her career in eighth place on the UMass all-time points list with 77, and tied for tenth in goals with 30.
