Minutewomen Fall To Richmond 7-3 In Season Finale

AMHERST, Mass. - Edda Gararsdottir and Whitney Sikes scored two goals apiece as Richmond downed the University of Massachusetts, 7-3, this afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's soccer action at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen conclude the 2002 season with a 6-11 overall record and 5-6 in the Atlantic 10.
Gardarsdottir, Sikes and Jenna Merriam each scored a goal in the first half as the Spiders built a 3-0 lead by halftime, knocking UMass junior goalkeeper Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) from the game. Nigh made six saves in the half.
Jessica Marino scored her fifth goal of the season just 2:03 into the second half giving the Spiders a four-goal lead. Six minutes later, freshman Adair Blyler (Lexington, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal putting the Minutewomen on the board. It was her third goal of the season.
After Richmond's Meredith Johnson game the Spiders their four-goal lead back scoring on a penalty kick, the Minutewomen scored two goals in less than three minutes making it a 5-3 game. Senior Martha Conover (Liverpool, N.Y.), playing in her final game as a Minutewoman, scored her third goal of the season at the 67:40 mark. Junior Erin Lilly (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) assisted on the play. At the 70:35 mark, Lilly scored her sixth of the year, off an assist from Blyler cutting the Spiders lead to two, but the Minutewomen could not get any closer.
Richmond scored two more insurance goals en route to their 11th win of the season.
Nigh and freshman Kristen Rutland (Fayetteville, Ga.) combined to make nine saves in one half each. Richmond out-shot the Minutewomen, 28-17 on the day.
