AMHERST, Mass. - Ina Kain scored the game-winning goal just over 20 minutes into the first half as George Washington University downed the University of Massachusetts, 2-0, this afternoon in women's soccer action at Rudd Field. With the loss, the Minutewomen have been eliminated from postseason play.

The Minutewomen out-shot the Colonials, 14-12 in the contest and held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-1. Massachusetts had a couple of excellent scoring chances, especially in the second half, but could not solve GW goalkeeper Kelly Paolucci.

Kimberly Sanders added an insurance goal for the Colonials at the 39:51 mark to secure the victory. Lisa Backman assisted on the play.

UMass junior co-captain Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) made three saves in the loss, while Paolucci stopped nine shots en route to her third shutout of the season.

The Minutewomen will close out the 2002 season on Sunday, Nov. 3, when they host Richmond in a 1:00 p.m. game at Rudd Field. UMass seniors Andrea Trujillo (Englewood, Colo.), Martha Conover (Liverpool, N.Y.) and Alexi Rudd (Orinda, Calif.) will be honored prior to the game as they will be playing in the final home game of their careers.
