Oct. 27, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Rayney Meisel (South Eugene, Ore.) scored two goals and junior Erin Lilly (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist as the University of Massachusetts dominated Saint Joseph's, 3-0, in Atlantic 10 women's soccer action this afternoon at Rudd Field.
"Our whole goal was to get through these two games and have something to play for next weekend," said UMass Head Coach Jim Rudy. "We had great ball possession today creating some great scoring opportunities in front of the net and were fortunate to be able to capitalize on a couple of them."
Meisel started the scoring off for the Minutewomen just 8:26 into the game. She received a pass from Lilly and blasted it past Christy Ganc, the Hawk keeper for her first goal of the season. The Minutewomen had a couple more scoring chances in the first half, but settled for a 1-0 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Meisel iced the game for the Minutewomen with her second goal of the game at the 60:58 mark. Senior co-captain Martha Conover (Liverpool, N.Y.) was credited with an assist on the play. Lilly then added an insurance goal at the 80:43 mark. Freshman Lindsey Bellini (Webster, N.Y.) assisted on Lilly's fifth goal of the weekend.
Junior co-captain Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) made four saves in 83:35, earning her second shutout of the season. Freshman Kristen Rutland (Fayetteville, Ga.) played the final 6:25 and did not face a shot.
Massachusetts out-shot the Hawks, 24-13 and held the edge in corner kicks, 8-3.
The Minutewomen will next face George Washington on Friday, Nov. 1, in a 2:00 p.m. at Rudd Field. The Minutewomen trail the Colonials by three points for the fourth and final play-off spot in the A-10 Tournament and now control its own destiny.
