Britt Canfield's Double-OT Goal Lifts Minutewomen Past Explorers, 2-1
Oct. 23, 2005
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Massachusetts defeated La Salle on Sunday afternoon by the score of 2-1. La Salle was 15 seconds away victory Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium, but Massachusetts scored the tying goal, then with less than two minutes left in the second overtime, tallied the game-winner.
The Minutewomen (7-8-1, 4-3-0 A-10) kept their hopes of an Atlantic 10 Tournament berth alive with the victory, and the Explorers drop their fourth conference game by a 2-1 margin.
La Salle (4-11-2, 1-5-1 A-10) got on the board early in the first half when senior Alexis Petrucci made good on a penalty kick, which resulted when she was tripped up in the box. For Petrucci, it was her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Explorers, up 1-0, still continued to pressure looking for an insurance goal, including a near miss by freshman Dana Giordano with under 14 minutes to play. The missed opportunities came back to haunt La Salle, when with 15 seconds remaining in the game, UMass junior Stephanie Barrett scored the equalizer (as well as her first goal of the season) on an assist from Adair Blyler at 89:45. Barrett would figure in on the gamewinner as well, serving a ball to Britt Canfield, who put it in the back of the net at 108:12 for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The Minutewomen return to action next weekend when they face Charlotte and Richmond on the road.
