Strong First Half Propels UMass Past URI, 3-1
Oct. 6, 2012
AMHERST, Mass. - Matching its highest goal output of the 2012 season, the UMass women's soccer team posted three first half tallies to down Rhode Island, 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field. With their second straight win, the Minutewomen improve to 7-6-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Rams drop to 7-6-1 and 0-3-0 in the conference.
UMass wasted no time getting on the board as junior Grace Coombs' strike from 25 yards out found the back of the net just 31 seconds into the match. Coombs ran onto a pass from sophomore Moa Mattsson, who corralled a centering feed from junior Brittany Moore.
However, URI managed level the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute. Off a corner kick from Jennifer Barrientos, Dariann Sellitti battled through traffic and knocked the ball past goalkeeper Emily Cota near the far post.
The Minutewomen quickly regained the lead, though. Mattsson headed down sophomore Tori Sousa's corner kick from close range for her team-leading seventh tally of the season at 25:47.
UMass then closed out the scoring in 32nd minute as sophomore Emily Benjamin finished off a cross from Sousa, her first collegiate goal.
Cota logged two saves and picked up the win (5-2-0), while Chelsea Broghamer had three stops in net for the Rams. Shots were even in the contest at 11-11, while Rhode Island led in corners, 4-3. Fouls were 16-13 against the Minutewomen.
UMass returns to action next weekend, Oct. 12-14, making its first Atlantic 10 road trip of the season. The Minutewomen are set to take on Saint Joseph's on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
