Minutewomen Down Xavier, 2-1
Oct. 4, 2002
CINCINNATI, Ohio. - Freshman Lindsey Bellini (Webster, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the 59th minute to give the University of Massachusetts a 2-1 win over Xavier University in Atlantic 10 women's soccer action this afternoon. Junior Erin Lilly (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) assisted on Bellini's third goal in as many games.
"After Xavier ended our season most-suddenly and very early last year, this was an appropriate way to start our second season in 2002," said Massachusetts head coach Jim Rudy.
Down 1-0 late in the first half, junior Michelle Luttati (Westford, Mass.) received a pass from senior Alexi Rudd (Orinda, Calif.) off a free kick and scored her first collegiate goal with just 3:14 remaining in the first half.
Xavier struck first with 17:45 remaining in the first half when Melissa Clavier headed in a corner kick from Tracy Veith.
Massachusetts junior co-captain Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) made eight saves in the win, while Megan Veith stopped four shots for the Musketeers.
The game, originally scheduled for 7:00 p.m. this evening, had to be moved due to the remnants of Hurricane Lilly moving into the Ohio Valley. Still, the second half was played in a steady downpour with gusty winds.
The Minutewomen are now 2-6 overall and 1-1 in the Atlantic 10. They will continue the Ohio swing with a 1:00 p.m. game at Dayton on Sunday, Oct. 6.
