AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass women's soccer team dropped its Atlantic 10 opener, 4-0, to defending champion Dayton on Friday afternoon on a rain-soaked Rudd Field. Following the setback, the Minutewomen are now 5-6-0 on the year (0-1-0 A-10), while the Flyers move to 7-3-0 (1-0-0 A-10) with their fourth straight victory.

After several early chances for UMass, including a shot by sophomore Moa Mattsson that sailed just high over the crossbar, Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the 16h minute. Ashley Campbell fired a shot in the air from the right-hand side of the box that tucked inside the far post for her sixth of the season with Colleen Williams and Juliana Libertin picking up assists.

Then at the 31:30 mark, the Flyers increased their advantage to 2-0. Moments after entering the match, Kelsey Smigel had a chip shot from the right of goal inside the 18 that found the back of the net.

Dayton went on to add two more in the second half. Williams banked in a shot off the underside of the crossbar at 57:07, while Libertin capped off the scoring in the 66th minute with a strike from the edge of the box that was put in along the ground.

Senior Emily Cota totaled 10 saves in the setback for UMass as the squad was out-shot 28-10. Jordin Melchert tallied two stops and collected the shutout. The Flyers held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks on the afternoon, while fouls were 13-9, against Dayton.

The Minutewomen will play their third of four straight at home this Sunday, Sept. 30, playing host to Xavier at 1 p.m.
