Women's Soccer Downs Iowa State, 1-0
Sept. 20, 2002
AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Lindsey Bellini (Webster, N.Y.) scored the lone goal of the game in the 13th minute to give the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Iowa State in the first round of the UMass Soccer Classic. The win was the first of the season for the Minutewomen (1-5-0), while Iowa State drops to 3-3-0 overall.
Bellini received a perfect pass from junior Michelle Luttati (Westford, Mass.) in the box and blasted it past Iowa State goalkeeper Beth Chapman for her first career point at the 12:11 mark. Junior Erin Lilly (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) was also credited with an assist on the goal.
UMass junior co-captain Kelly Nigh (Seattle, Wash.) turned in another impressive performance in net as she stopped 10 Cyclone shots for her sixth consecutive double-digit save tally.
The Cyclones' best opportunity came in the 77th minute as Deb Benakis blasted a shot just over the cross bar. They had another great chance to get the equalizer late in the first half, but Nigh made a sprawling save on a shot attempt by Kristina Baumann.
The Cyclones out-shot the Minutewomen 25-12, including 17-8 in the second half. They also held the edge, 11-1, in corner kicks. Chapman recorded five saves for Iowa State.
In the early game, Rhode Island shocked No. 9 Auburn, 2-1. The Tigers, who came into the match 6-0 on five consecutive shutouts, had a 1-0 lead at halftime, but URI's Melanie Kasparek scored two unassisted goals in less than seven minutes midway through the second half to knock the Tigers from the ranks of the unbeaten.
Massachusetts plays Auburn Sunday, Sept. 22 at 1:00 p.m., while Iowa State will take on Fairfield at 11:00 a.m., in the second day of the UMass Soccer Classic.
Saves: Iowa State - Beth Chapman 5 (90:00); Massachusetts - Kelly Nigh 10 (90:00).
