Women's Soccer Defeats Binghamton, 6-2

AMHERST, Mass. - Freshman Stephanie Santos (Ludlow, Mass.) scored three goals to lead the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team to a 6-2 victory over Binghamton here on Sunday. With the win, UMass' record climbs to 2-1 on the season, while Binghamton falls to 3-2.
The Minutewomen took control early in the match, out shooting Binghamton 10-1 in the first half. During that period, Santos netted two goals, while sophomore Erin Lilly (Ballson Lake, N.Y.) gave UMass a 3-0 advantage on her first goal of the season with 22 seconds remaining in the half.
Santos scored her third of the day 13 minutes into the second half to give UMass an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Binghamton tried to rally back with Tracey Anderson's goal in the 79th minute, but freshman Carly Turman (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) and senior Katelyn Jones (Round Lake, N.Y.) added goals late in the contest to extend UMass' lead to 6-1. Binghamton's Merri Montenare closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal with only five seconds remaining in the contest.
UMass will continue home play next weekend as the Minutewomen begin Atlantic 10 action by hosting Rhode Island on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., and New Hampshire on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
