Sept. 13, 2013
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The UMass women's soccer team hung tough with #20 Texas A&M, but a hat trick by Shea Groom helped carry the Aggies past the Minutewomen, 3-1 on Friday evening at Ellis Field. The setback leaves UMass at 1-4-1, while Texas A&M improves to 4-2-1 on the season.
Early in the first half, Groom gave her squad a 2-0 lead with two goals just 59 seconds apart. On her first tally, Groom dribbled around several Minutewomen defenders and sent a shot along the ground into the bottom right corner of the net 16:27 into the contest.
Then at the 17:26 mark, Groom corralled the ball amidst a scrum in the penalty area and poked it home for her second of the night.
UMass cut its deficit in half in the 33rd minute. Following her own throw in, sophomore Rebekka Sverrisdóttir collected the ball off a deflection from an Aggie defender and served it towards the top of the 18-yard box. Senior Brittany Moore brought the service down and lofted it over netminder Jordan Day for her second goal in as many games.
Groom later sealed the victory for Texas A&M, completing her hat trick at the 79:15 mar by sending a ball home from the top of the six-yard box.
The Aggies finished with a 32-8 advantage in shots and led in corner kicks, 10-2. Fouls were even at seven apiece.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Danielle Kriscenski recorded a season-high 10 saves on the night, while Day made two stops for Texas A&M.
UMass will close out its trip to Texas with a 1:00 p.m. (ET) match on Sunday, Sept. 15, against Lamar at Tomball High School in Tomball, Texas.
