Aug. 28, 2014
SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Sophomore Megan Burke's goal in the 111th minute lifted the UMass women's soccer team to its first win of the season, 1-0 in double overtime over Bryant at Bulldog Soccer Field on Thursday afternoon. Following the victory, the Minutewomen are now 1-1-1 on the year, while the Bulldogs fall to 1-2-0.
UMass dominated possession in the opening half, ending the period with a 12-2 shot advantage. Burke did find the back of the net off a rebound in the 15th minute, but the goal was called back for offsides.
The Minutewomen had another quality chance in the 61st minute as junior Jackie Bruno's strike hit the post. Later in the first overtime, sophomore Daniela Alvarez was denied by Bryant netminder Kaylan Conrad.
Then, just 17 seconds into the second overtime, Burke followed a cross from sophomore Laura Johns into the box. While Conrad managed to knock down the ball played in by Johns, Burke was there to clean up the rebound for her second goal in the past three matches.
UMass finished the afternoon with a 24-5 shot advantage and led in corner kicks, 6-4. Conrad totaled 10 saves in net for the Bulldogs and redshirt sophomore Danielle Kriscenski turned aside one en route to her sixth career shutout. Fouls were 19-10, against the Minutewomen.
UMass will be back in action on Sunday, August 31, when the squad will play host to Providence in its 2014 home opener at 1 p.m. on Rudd Field.
