Women's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw With Towson In Opener
Aug. 22, 2014
The Tigers took a lead just 1:05 into the contest as Gabby Scirica won the ball in the middle of the box and put a shot home from near the penalty spot, off the hands of Minutewomen goalkeeper Danielle Kriscenski.
UMass came up with the equalizer, though, in the 23rd minute. Sophomore Alyssa Fratarcangeli's flick-on header from the midfield set up a breakaway for classmate Megan Burke, who tucked in her first of the season into the bottom of the net to level the score at 1-1.
Burke later nearly won the contest three minutes into overtime, corralling the ball at the top of the box off a free kick, but her shot sailed just high of the crossbar.
Then with less than five minutes to play in the match, freshman Natalie Perussault came within inches of recording the golden goal, however her strike from the right side rung off the far post.
The Minutewomen finished the match with a 19-13 shot advantage and led in corner kicks, 7-5. Kriscenski totaled four saves for UMass, while Erin Quinn stopped five in net for Towson.
The Minutewomen will be back in action on Sunday, Aug. 24, facing host James Madison at 2 p.m.
