AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore skier Eliza Hawkins (Shelburne, Mass.) has been named the UMass/Dinn Bros. Athlete of the Week after winning the USCSA National Championships in Sugarloaf, Maine on Friday. She will now go on to compete in the U.S. Championships beginning March 25 where she will compete against the top skiers in the country, including recent gold medalist Julia Mancuso.

Hawkins will be honored this Wednesday, March 15 at the UMass Sports Luncheon which will be held in the Student Union Auditorium starting at Noon. The guest speakers will be Travis Ford (men's basketball) and Greg Canella (men's lacrosse). The Sports Luncheon runs from Noon to 1:00 p.m. with a salad-to-dessert buffet for just $7.00. Call 413-545-4290 to join us.

Hawkins finished second in the giant slalom on Wednesday and fifth in the slalom on Friday to secure the overall title. Among her competitors were European skiers who had experience on the World Cup circuit.

Hawkins had a remarkable year competing in the giant slalom. She placed first in four out of the five carnivals this season, and finished second in the other carnival, as well as both the regional and national competitions.

This is the second consecutive year a Hawkins from UMass has won the national title. Last year, her brother junior Rush Hawkins, swept both events to win the national championship.
