AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts skiers Beau Gibson (Oakland, Md.) and Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.) were named co-Dinn Brothers/UMass Athletes of the Week, it was announced by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee this afternoon.

Gibson was crowned Eastern Regional champion as he led the men's squad to second-place overall at the United States Collegiate Skiing Association Eastern Regional championship. The junior captain was victorious in the giant slalom and finished third in the slalom, posting times of 1:30.54 and 1:26.41, respectively. Gibson's results marked the eighth and ninth times in which he finished in the top three out of 14 races this season, and the fifth time he won an event.

Lewenberg was also named Eastern Regional champion, on the women's side. Her win in the slalom and third place finish in the giant slalom led the squad to first place overall. The senior's time of 1:29.46 in the slalom edged her closest competitor by almost a full two seconds. Her time of 1:36.24 in the giant slalom left her merely three-tenths of a second out of second place. Lewenberg's performance reflected the eight and ninth times in which she has finished in the top five out of 14 races this year. The giant slalom victory was her third of the season.

"I am very proud of both of them" said Head Coach Igor Vanovac. "The whole team has worked hard all season, and Beau and Carolyn have been very good for us. Both are skiing really well."

The Eastern Regional competition was held at Waterville Valley, N.H., Feb. 23-24. The UMass skiers are currently in Truckee, Calif., for the USCSA Nationals, held from Mar. 3-8.
