AMHERST, Mass. - University of Massachusetts women's skiing freshman Ashley Maxfield (Craftsbury Common, Vt.) was named the Dinn Brothers / UMass Athlete of the Week by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee for her performance this past weekend.

Maxfield won both the Slalom and the Giant Slalom races at the Boston College Carnival held at Ascutney Mountain on Saturday, Feb. 7 and Sunday, Feb. 8. She finished first out of 51 competitors in the Slalom with a two-run time of 1:43.32 marking the fourth consecutive week she has won the event. In the Giant Slalom, Maxfield finished first out of 50 competitors with a two-run time of 1:44.48 to mark the second consecutive week she has won the GS. As a team, UMass women's placed third in the Slalom and placed second in the GS.

For the year, Maxfield has won six of the eight races she has competed in, including a first place showing in every slalom race and a first or second place showing in every Giant Slalom race.

The UMass men's and women's ski teams return to action this weekend as they travel to Mount Sunapee in Newbury, Vt., for the Colby-Sawyer Slalom Carnival on Friday, Feb. 13. On Saturday, Feb. 14 the teams will travel to Pat's Peak in Henniker, Vt. for the Saint Anselm Giant Slalom Carnival.

Women's Skiing Finishes Sixth In Giant Slalom At USCSA Nationals
  • Giant Slalom Results
    The UMass Women's Ski Team got underway at the USCSA Nationals on Wednesday, skiing to a sixth place finish in the Giant Slalom in Winter Park, Colo. Emily Shilletto (Toronto, Ont.) led the way for the Minutewomen, finishing 13th. The Women's Team will be back in action on Friday when they will compete in the Slalom.

    Q&A With Head Ski Coach Skip Fox Recapping The ECSC Regionals
    The UMass Women's Ski Team captured a trip to the USCSA Nationals next weekend after their fifth place finish in last weekend's ECSC Regionals. The Minutewomen placed three skiers in the top-15 during both days of the Regionals. The Men's team, the defending USCSA National Champions, will not be returning to the Nationals after their sixth place finish over the weekend. The Minutemen had a tough day in Saturday's Slalom, finishing in ninth place before recovering with a second place finish in the Giant Slalom.

    Women's Skiing Places Fifth, Men Sixth, At ECSC Regionals

    The UMass Ski team competed in the ECSC Regionals this past weekend in Waterville Valley, N.H. The women's team finished fifth overall, securing a spot in the USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. from March 3-7. The Men's team finished sixth overall after a disappointing ninth place finish in the Slalom before a second place finish in Sunday's Giant Slalom. UMass Skiing will be back in action this weekend when they will participate in the EISA Regionals at Sugarloff.
