Brother-Sister Duo Rush And Eliza Hawkins lead UMass To Strong Finishes At The Brown/MIT Winter Carnivals

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's ski team enjoyed another successful weekend with strong finishes at both the MIT Carnival Slalom and the Brown Carnival Giant Slalom. The men won the slalom event scoring eight points, while the women took home a second place in the giant slalom with 21 points and sixth in the slalom with 19 points.
Sophomore Rush Hawkins (Shelburne, Mass.) continued his excellence on the slopes leading the Minutemen to victory with his first place finish in the slalom at the MIT Carnival with a time of 1:22.44. Hawkins was helped by freshman Jason Small (Shelburne Falls, Mass) and junior Pat Bachant (Hubbardston, Mass.) who finished second and 10th respectively with times of 1:24.80 and 1:27.96. Junior Marc Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.) also posted a top-20 finish placing 16th with a time of 1:31.18.
The Minutemen placed fifth in the Brown Giant Slalom. The highlight of the carnival was Rush Hawkins again, who finished first with a time of 1:46.93. With the win, Hawkins has won five of his last six events. Also placing in the top 15 for UMass was senior Patrich Hoffer (New Canaan, Conn.) who finished eighth with a time of 1:51.64.
Meanwhile, the Minutwomen thrived at the Brown Carnival placing second with four skiers placing in the top 15. Freshman Eliza Hawkins (Shelburne, Mass) led the way with her second place finish with a time of 1:53.36, while junior Lisbet Rauh (Princeton, Mass.) finished eighth with a time of 1:58.07.
The Minutewomen also finished sixth in the MIT Carnival Slalom, which was highlighted, by Eliza Hawkins's sixth place finish with a time of 1:33.64
Both the men and women's ski team return to action Saturday and Sunday as they travel to Ascutney, Vt. for the Boston College Carnival Slalom and Giant Slalom.
