Women Win Giant Slalom At USCSA Nationals

Truckee, Calif. - The University of Massachusetts women's ski team won the giant slalom event at the USCSA National Championship Wednesday, Mar. 5. This victory marks the third straight event win for the women's squad, including both the giant slalom and slalom at the Eastern Regional Championships last weekend. The women were also the regular season champions in the MacConnell Division of the Eastern Collegiate Skiing Conference.
Sophomore Nikki Smith (Okemos, Mich.) led the way for the Minutewomen, finishing in third place. Eastern Regional champion, senior Carolyn Lewenberg (Newton, Mass.), skied to a seventh place finish, followed by senior captain Molly Lyon (Pittsfield, Mass.) in 10th. Freshman Caitlin Doughty (Quincy, Mass.) registered an 11th place time.
The giant slalom was the first event in which the Minutewomen competed at this year's nationals. They will ski again in their final event, the slalom, March 7. The men's squad is competing in the giant slalom event today, March 6, and will ski their slalom races Saturday, March 8.
