Jason Small and Eliza Hawkins Triumph At USCSA Regional Over the Weekend

Waterville Valley, N.H.- Seniors Jason Small and Eliza Hawkins took first overall at this weekend's U.S. Collegiate Snowsport Association Regional. Hawkins took third in the Slalom on Saturday and second in the Giant Slalom on Sunday to lead all women and help the Minutewomen take second overall as a team. Small placed second in Saturday's Slalom and skied to victory in the Giant Slalom on Sunday. The Minutemen as a team captured first place, beating Plymouth State University by one point.
For the Minutemen, it was truly a team effort in the Giant Slalom event. Four out of five skiers for the men place in the top ten for this event. The top three finishers for UMass included Small who took first with a combined time of 1:59.67, Ian Hohmeister who placed sixth with a time of 2:01.12, and Andrew Hawes finished ninth at 2:02.07. Although his score did not count, Matthew Small had a great race finishing with a time of 2:02.12 to take tenth.
Hawkins was a dominating factor for the Minutewomen as she skied to a second place finish in the Giant Slalom with a combined time of 2:05.61. Sophomore Emily Shilletto took fourth with a time of 2:07.76, and freshman Jamie Taloumis finished 14th at a time of 2:10.91. Putting in clean runs were Ashley Hawes and Heidi Skinner who finished at 17th (2:11.93) and 20th (2:12.99), respectively.
UMass men's ski team had four skiers finish in the top ten for the entire two-day USCSA Regional that included the Slalom and Giant Slalom. Jason Small captured first, Andrew Hawes took sixth, Matthew Small placed eighth, and Ian Hohmeister finished tenth. The women's ski team saw Eliza Hawkins take first, Emily Shilletto place fifth, and Ashley Hawes come in at 13th overall for the weekend.
The Minutemen and women look strong as they head into the USCSA Nationals being held at Sunday River, Maine, on March 2nd- 8th.
