Emily Shilletto finished 10th in the Giant Slalom Saturday

LINCOLN, N.H. - UMass Skiing competed in the Giant Slalom at the MIT Carnival Saturday at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, N.H. The women's squad finished in fourth place, just .31 seconds behind Plymouth State, while the men also skied to a fourth place team finish. UMass was led by Alex Zahoruiko (North Andover, Mass.) and Jamie Taloumis (Chicopee, Mass.), who finished third and fourth respectively. Both teams will return to the slopes tomorrow in the Slalom at the UMass Carnival on Pat's Peak.

Zahoruiko's third place finish with a time of 1:44.57 was just .34 seconds behind the first place finisher. Matthew Small (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) also had a successful day on the mountain, skiing to an eighth place finish with a time of 1:46.49. Tom Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) placed 11th with a time of 1:47.07 while Travis Hopkins (North Andover, Mass.) finished 15th with a time of 1:47.40. Stefan Ogle (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Andrew Hawes (Concord, Mass.) finished 37th and 38th, respectively.

Talmouis finished with a time of 1:49.33 for the women, while Emily Shilletto (Toronto, Ont.) skied to a 10th place finish with a time of 1:50.94. Heidi Skinner (Westeron, Vt.) placed 14th with a time of 1:51.36, while Abby Nolan (Duxbury, Mass.) finished 19th (1:51.77). Amy Gifford (Readfield, Maine) placed 21st for the Minutewomen with a time of 1:51.99 with Lauren Levey (Mequon, Wis.) finishing 35th (1:55.24).

    The UMass Women's Ski Team got underway at the USCSA Nationals on Wednesday, skiing to a sixth place finish in the Giant Slalom in Winter Park, Colo. Emily Shilletto (Toronto, Ont.) led the way for the Minutewomen, finishing 13th. The Women's Team will be back in action on Friday when they will compete in the Slalom.

    The UMass Women's Ski Team captured a trip to the USCSA Nationals next weekend after their fifth place finish in last weekend's ECSC Regionals. The Minutewomen placed three skiers in the top-15 during both days of the Regionals. The Men's team, the defending USCSA National Champions, will not be returning to the Nationals after their sixth place finish over the weekend. The Minutemen had a tough day in Saturday's Slalom, finishing in ninth place before recovering with a second place finish in the Giant Slalom.

    The UMass Ski team competed in the ECSC Regionals this past weekend in Waterville Valley, N.H. The women's team finished fifth overall, securing a spot in the USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, Colo. from March 3-7. The Men's team finished sixth overall after a disappointing ninth place finish in the Slalom before a second place finish in Sunday's Giant Slalom. UMass Skiing will be back in action this weekend when they will participate in the EISA Regionals at Sugarloff.
