UMass Ski Teams Open Season Strong With WIns

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts ski teams opened the 2004 season with a strong showing at the UMass Carnival held at Berkshire East in Charlemont, Mass., over the weekend, as the women placed first out of 10 teams, while the men placed fifth out of 10 teams. Individually, UMass garnered a first-place finish in the slalom from freshman Ashley Maxfield (Craftsbury Common, Vt.) while classmate Rush Hawkins (Shelbourne, Mass.) won the Giant Slalom.
The UMass women, paced by Maxfield's individual slalom victory, finished first as a team in the Slalom with 210.81 points and also finished first in the Giant Slalom with 284.4 points. Individually in the Giant Slalom, Maxfield placed second with a two-run score of 1:31.92 just missing out on first place by 0.47 seconds. The Minutewomen also got great runs from sophomore Caitlin Doughty (North Quincy, Mass.) who placed fourth with with a two-race time of 1:34.65.
Individually in the men's Slalom, Pomeroy turned in the best UMass time of the afternoon with a 1:05.58 showing placing him eighth overall out of 72 competitors.
The UMass men's and women's ski teams return to action this weekend, Jan. 24th and 25th as they travel to Waterville Valley, N.H. for the Plymouth State Carnival.
